The pieces above are the result of a design-related exercise I found online. It was set out by John P. Corrigan. Originally, I did these square grid exercises by hand, using a sketchbook and colouring pencils. The aim for me, was to play around with a simple grid (a 3x3 square) and use a fixed set of colours to demonstrate overlap, rows, columns etc. Later, I scanned my hand-drawn results and edited them in Adobe Illustrator. I modified the colours to find a colour scheme I think is more original and harmonious. In doing so, I began to experiment with building more complicated compositions using the original squares, only rotated or reflected to build a new pattern:
